An introduction to the elements of music and the use of these elements in various musical styles including masterpieces of Western music, popular and folk music, as well as music of other cultures.

This course presents an introduction to the masterpieces of Western music from the Medieval period to the present day. In order to gain an appreciation of these works, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the actual activity of “active listening” to the works themselves, discussing their place in history, their genre and how these musical works helped mold Western Civilization that has evolved into the music we listen to today. To this end, the basic elements of music are also examined in order to develop and cultivate the ability of “active listening”. In addition to the listening experience, the appreciation of these examples is enhanced by the study of the particular historical setting in which they were written as well as the use of new enhanced listening technologies like CDs, DVDs, MP3 players and YouTube.
