A survey of American history from Native American life before European arrival in North America through the Civil War and Reconstruction, with a particular emphasis on the following themes:
1. How different groups in American history have understood and argued for their particular understandings of the concepts of “freedom” and “liberty”; the ways in which different groups’ understandings of those concepts have often been in conflict with each other; and why particular understandings of those concepts have won out over others in different time periods.
2. How, and in what ways has America been both a place of increasing freedom, liberty, and economic and social opportunity, as well as a place of exclusion, oppression and dispossession? How, and in what ways have these two trends interacted with each other?
